Overview
Every business has recurring work: weekly reports, monthly billing runs, quarterly reviews, daily check-ins. Without automation, someone has to remember to create these tasks or maintain a checklist. ClickUp's built-in recurring tasks feature handles this entirely — tasks reset or duplicate on your chosen schedule with all subtasks, checklists, and assignees intact. Combined with task templates, this becomes a complete system for repeatable processes.

Step-by-step guide (4 steps)
Identify your recurring work
List every task your team does on a predictable schedule — daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly. Examples: send weekly report, reconcile accounts, post to social media, hold team standup, back up data.
Create a task template in ClickUp
In ClickUp, build a task with all the detail your recurring task needs: description, checklist, subtasks, assignees, attachments. Then click the '...' menu → Save as Template. Name it clearly (e.g., 'Weekly Client Report Task').
Include a checklist in the template with every step required to complete the task. This acts as a mini SOP inside each recurring instance.
Enable recurring schedule on the task
Open the task and click the due date field. Select 'Set Recurrence'. Choose your schedule: daily, weekly on specific days, monthly on a specific date, or custom. Choose whether the task resets (same task marked incomplete) or duplicates (creates a new task).
Set up reminders and assignees
Assign each recurring task to the responsible team member. Add a reminder 1-2 days before the due date so they're notified in advance. Use ClickUp's 'Reminder' field or connect to Slack notifications.
What you'll get
Recurring tasks are created automatically with no manual effort
Nothing falls through the cracks on predictable work
Templates ensure consistent quality and process every time
Team members are reminded before deadlines without manager follow-up
Common mistakes to avoid
Using 'reset' instead of 'duplicate' for tasks that need a fresh record each time
Not including checklists in templates, leaving ambiguity about what 'done' means
Setting too many recurring tasks and cluttering the workspace with noise
Forgetting to update the template when the process changes
